The famous Cistercian Abbey of San Galgano is one of the most evocative and fascinating monasteries in all of Italy, known to be completely in ruins and roofless. You will undoubtedly be captivated at first sight! The story dates back to the distant 1100s, when the noble knight Galgano Guidotti decided to give up his wealthy life and to have a chapel built on Mount Siepi, where he died as a hermit. A short distance from the Abbey is the Hermitage that guards the mystery of 'Excalibur', the sword that St Galgano drove into the rock as a sign of peace.
